James Jerome O'Toole was a Major League baseball player who pitched for the Cincinnati Reds (1958-1966) and Chicago White Sox (1967). Jim, his nickname, went to Leo High School in Chicago, Illinois, and eventually became their first big leaguer. The big lefty pitched first at the University of Wisconsin, their tenth twirler to appear in the bigs, but their first to pitch in an All-Star Game (1963).

In 1970, Jim O'Toole was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame, joining Paul Derringer (1958), Johnny Vander Meer (1958), Bucky Walters (1958), Eppa Rixey (1959), Ewell Blackwell (1960), Noodles Hahn (1963), Pete Donohue (1964), Red Lucas (1965), Dolf Luque (1967) and Joe Nuxhall (1968).

Jim O'Toole

Jim O'Toole was born James Jerome O'Toole on Jan. 10, 1937, in Chicago. He came to the Reds after only one Minor League season with the 1958 Nashville Vols, for which he paced the club in wins, innings pitched, strikeouts and bases on balls.

O'Toole was a large contributor to the Reds' pennant win in 1961. He posted the second-best winning percentage in the National League with a record of 19-9 to complement a 3.10 ERA that year.

Between 1960-64, he won a total of 81 games for the Reds. From 1958-66, O-Toole went 94-81 with an ERA of 3.59 for the Reds. In 1963, he was elected to the NL All-Star team. He left to play his final season with the Chicago White Sox, his hometown team.

On July 2, 1960, Jim O'Toole married his high school sweetheart, Betty Jane Wall. They raised eleven children (6 girls & 5 boys) in Cincinnati and when he passed away in 2015, Jim had 33 grandchildren! The Reds commented after his death that he was "a fixture at Reds events of all types and sizes throughout his post-playing career. No day was more special to Jim - and his expansive family - than Opening Day."
