Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"Nicknamed 'Rope' for his line-drive hitting, (Bob) Boyd was the first Oriole regular to bat over .300 with .318 in 1957 and .309 the next year. Despite his high BA, he lacked the home run punch expected from a first baseman and was primarily a pinch hitter in his last seasons." - Marazzi, Rich. Author. Baseball Players of the 1950s: A Biographical Dictionary of All 1,560 Major Leaguers. McFarland & Company. 30 November 2009.

Did you know that The Rope, on April 9, 1959, took part in a little baseball history, the first triple play that ever took place on Opening Day? With a runner on first and second, Ed Fitz Gerald hit a hard bouncer direcly to The Rope who tagged the runner leaving first base. Boyd threw to Chico Carrasquel (SS) who tagged the runner leaving second. El Gato threw it back to Bob in time, getting Fitz Gerald before he was safe at first.
