Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"In his book Always an Angel, Tim Salmon wrote, 'When I think of the players who have had the most influence on my baseball career, the one who always comes to mind first is Chili Davis.' Tim Salmon said that Davis showed the young players the hard work it took to be an MLB player. According to Tim Salmon, Davis was a 'one man college of baseball knowledge' who was always talking strategy and giving pointers to the younger Angels. Right before he would go up to bat, Tim Salmon would go over his approach at the plate with Davis because 'it seemed to me at times that Chili could read pitchers’ minds.'" - Mays, Jeff. Halos Daily Staff Writer. HALO HISTORY: CHILI DAVIS, PROFESSIONAL HITTER. 27 July 2013.

Charles Theodore Davis was a Major League Baseball player with the San Francisco Giants (1981-1987), California Angels (1988-1990), Minnesota Twins (19911992), California Angels (1993-1996), Kansas City Royals (1997), and New York Yankees (1998-1999). Did you know that Chili, his nickname, was the first player in Major League history to appear in the majors who was born on the island of Jamaica? Three Jamaican-born ballplayers have since joined Chili Bowl; Devon White, Rolando Roomes, and Justin Masterson, and all three were also born in Kingston.

Did you know that Chili Davis, one of the greatest switch hitters in baseball history, finished his career with three-hundred fifty home runs — the seventh-highest total in major league history for switch-hitters, behind Mickey Mantle (536), Eddie Murray (504), Chipper Jones (468), Carlos Beltran (435), Mark Teixeira (409), and Lance Berkman (366)?

How did Chili Davis get his moniker "Chili / Chili Bowl / Chili Dawg"? In The Sporting News (07/05/1982, "Rookies", Page 14) Davis shared the following story, "My dad gave me a haircut...and it wasn’t a very good one. When I went out of the house, my friends got on my case and said it looked like someone put a chili bowl over my head and cut around it."

On June 5, 1983, Chili Davis hit a home run from each side of the plate in the same game, the first of nine such games in his career, and the first ever by a player from the San Francisco Giants. At the time of his retirement, Chili Davis had eleven games in his career where he homered from both sides of the plate, tied for the most in baseball history (since broken). What Hall of Fame slugger was he tied with? [Answer]
