Did you know that Harvey Kuenn, during his rookie season, had a Major League leading 209 hits (as well as a rookie record 167 singles), earning him the American League Rookie of the Year — the first recipient in baseball history from either league with a 200-hit season?

Harvey Kuenn was the ninth American League player to record 200-or-more hits during their rookie season, joining Shoeless Joe Jackson (233 hits in 1911), Earle Combs (203 hits in 1925), Roy Johnson (201 hits in 1929), Dale Alexander (215 hits in 1929), Hal Trosky (206 hits in 1934), Joe DiMaggio (206 hits in 1936), Johnny Pesky (205 hits in 1942) and Dick Wakefield (200 hits in 1943).

In 1959, Harvey Kuenn led every major league player in batting average (.353), easily capturing the American League batting crown. The Detroit Tigers had their seventh batting champion, joining Al Kaline, George Kell, Charlie Gehringer, Harry Heilmann, Heinie Manush, and Ty Cobb (all hall of famers)! Following that season, the seven time All-Star was traded to the Cleveland Indians for Rocky Colavito — the home run champion!
