Glenn Beckert Stats by Baseball Almanac |
Glenn Alfred Beckert was a Major League Baseball player with the Chicago Cubs (1965-1973) and San Diego Padres (1975). When Glenn took the field on April 12, 1965, he became the first Perry High School graduate to reach the majors!
Glenn Beckert had 461 assists at second base in 1968, second most, behind Bill Mazeroski. Beckert also turned the second most double plays, behind Cookie Rojas. And Beckert committed the second most errors, behind Ron Hunt. But Beckert was very durable, fielding his position more often than any other second baseman that year and was awarded with the Gold Glove, the second Chicago Cubs second baseman to ever receive the honor.
Did you know that Glenn "One Tough Out" Beckert had the fewest strikeouts per at bats in the National League five times (1966, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1972) during his career? Proof that he truly was an excellent contact hitter, one of the toughest batters to strike out at that time, and through today, only one Cubbie has ever led the senior circuit in AB/K as often as Bruno! Do you know who it was? Clue: he was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1939. [Answer]
