Howard Johnson Stats by Baseball Almanac |
Howard Michael Johnson was a Major League Baseball player for the Detroit Tigers (1982-1984), New York Mets (1985-1993), Colorado Rockies (1994) and Chicago Cubs (1995). HoJo, his nickname, was a five-tool, switch-hitting All-Star, and after being released by the Mets, he had (at that time) the second most doubles (behind Ed Kranepool), home runs, RBIs (behind Darryl Strawberry), and stolen bases (behind Mookie Wilson) in franchise history!

Did you know that when Howard Johnson stole his 30th base of the season, on September 11, 1987, he joined the 30-30 Club, having already collected 30+ home runs? HoJo and Darryl Strawberry were the first teammates in baseball history to reach the 30-30 plateau!
Did you know that Howard Johnson, after hitting 36 home runs in 1987, set the National League record for most home runs in a season by a switch-hitter? The mark, set fifty-three years earlier, was held by Ripper Collins. HoJo, however, would "only" hold the mark for twelve years - do you know what hall of famer broke it in 1999? [Answer]
Did you know that Howard Johnson entered the 30-30 Club again in 1989, becoming the first Mets' player to do it twice (and only the third National League player to do it twice)? HoJo entered the 30-30 Club a third time, in 1991, becoming the first National League player to ever do it three times, and through today, he is the only third baseman in baseball history to even do it twice!
