"By choice and through habit, Dernell Stenson's life was simply designed. While other baseball players organized their evenings with abandon, Stenson often preferred the solitude of a monk. His world revolved around a few blocks of one-stop convenience. His home, a modest two-bedroom condo off Chaparral Road, was dull. Dinners usually involved plastic containers from Boston Market. He shopped in the neat and simple department: jeans, sneakers, no bling-bling. As targets go, Stenson hardly fit the profile. The bars and restaurants that orbit the Phoenix suburbs are filled with athletes and celebrities who sit in the open-aired patios and flash wads of cash. So how is it that Stenson, a quiet, humble outfielder with the Cincinnati Reds who was playing for the Scottsdale Scorpions in the Arizona Fall League, became the murder victim in a case that grows more complicated by the hour?" - Staff Writer Lisa Olson in The New York Daily News (11/16/2003, WEB OF MYSTERY STALKS STENSON DEATH, Full Story)

Dernell Stenson Stats by Baseball Almanac |
Dernell Renauld Stenson was a Major League Baseball player for the Cincinnati Reds (2003). Dernell was drafted in the third round of the 1996, out of LaGrange High School (their second big leaguer, joining Mike Cameron), and found his way to the majors after a solid season (.306 / 14 HRs / 76 RBI) with the Double-A Chattanooga Lookouts.
On November 5, 2003, while playing in the Arizona Fall League, Dernell Stenson was murdered. He was leaving a nightclub in Scottsdale, Arizona, driving his own vehicle (a 2002 Isuzu Rodeo), when he was shot several times, then dragged over a 1,000 feet down the street after getting tangled in his seatbelt while attempting to flee his vehicle.

There were four men arrested for the crime initially. There were many rumors about many different motives, but ultimately, the Associated Press reported:
A man who pleaded guilty to murder in the 2003 slaying of a Cincinnati Reds prospect was sentenced to life in prison Friday, but a judge decided that Reginald Riddle will be eligible for parole after 25 years.
Riddle, 23, pleaded guilty in 2006 to first-degree murder of outfielder Dernell Stenson of LaGrange, Ga., as part of a plea agreement.
Riddle, originally of Harvey, Ill., and his accomplice, David Griffith, 24, were charged with kidnapping Stenson as he left a Scottsdale nightclub on Nov. 5, 2003, and stealing his SUV. Police reports show they drove to nearby Chandler, where Stenson tried to flee the vehicle. He was shot several times, became tangled in a seatbelt and was dragged more than 1,000 feet.
Griffith was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole last month after pleading guilty to murder, armed robbery and kidnapping. He had faced a death sentence.
