Gene Verble was born on Friday, June 29, 1928, in Concord, North Carolina. Verble was 22 years old when he broke into the big leagues on April 17, 1951, with the Washington Senators. "This slick fielding, hard-hitting shortstop helped lead the 1952 Lookouts to the Southern Association championship. Gene played in all 154 games that year - the only Lookout to do so. He hit .279 with 163 hits and 78 runs batted in. Verble played for parts of two seasons with the Senators, mostly at shortstop.
