Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"My mother wanted me to be a doctor, but I didn't like that. My mother wouldn't let me go to the ball field, but i used to steal time to play. I tell my mother I going to school but I used to go to the river and swim and play ball instead. I would have ended up in the mill but for baseball." - Rico Carty in Sport in Latin America and the Caribbean (Jose Arbena, Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, 05/01/2002, Page 78)

On April 12, 1966, the Atlanta Braves played their first regular season game in Atlanta, after moving the franchise from Milwaukee. The Braves lost 4-2 to the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates, but in the bottom of the second, Rico Carty led off the inning with a single off Bob Veale, the first hit by a Braves player in an Atlanta uniform and the first by a Braves player at Atlanta Stadium.

Rico Carty played for the 1965 Milwaukee Braves (their final year of existence) and the 1966 Atlanta Braves (their first year of existence). Those in that unique "club" also include Hank Aaron, Ted Abernathy, Sandy Alomar, Felipe Alou, Wade Blasingame, Frank Bolling, Clay Carroll, Ty Cline, Tony Cloninger, Mike de la Hoz, Hank Fischer, Ken Johnson, Mack Jones, Dick Kelley, Denny Lemaster, Eddie Mathews, Denis Menke, Phil Niekro, Billy O'Dell, Gene Oliver, Chi-Chi Olivo, Joe Torre and Woody Woodward.

Rico Carty was the first left fielder for the Atlanta Braves. Around the horn that historic day was Tony Cloninger (P), Joe Torre (C), Lee Thomas (1B), Frank Bolling (2B), Eddie Mathews (3B), Denis Menke (SS), Felipe Alou (CF) and Hank Aaron (RF).

Rico Carty hit .366 in 1970, the highest batting average in Major League Baseball that season, well ahead of Joe Torre who "only" hit .325, good enough for second place in the National League that season (Top 25), and well ahead of Alex Johnson who "only" hit .329, the highest batting average in the American League that season (Top 25). The batting title won by Rico Carty was the first by a Braves player in Atlanta.

Did you know that Rico Carty once hit safely in thirty-one consecutive games (Rico Carty 1970 Game by Game Batting Logs), the longest hitting streak in franchise history for forty-one years, until Dan Uggla hit safely in thirty three games in 2011? [30-Consecutive Game Hitting Streaks]
