"Dawgonnit. That (Joe) Medwick don't fight fair at all. You argue with him for a bit and then he beats you before you've even had a chance to speak your piece." - Dean, Dizzy. Hall of Fame Pitcher. Ducky? Muscles? Fans nicknamed Joe Medwick "Ducky" because of his waddle when he walked (or maybe it was his girlfriend, who said he swims like a duck, see card below, the mystery remains unsolved). His stocky build led to the nickname of "Muscles" which meant that most of his teammates did not dare to use the fan-issued "Ducky" nickname to his face.

Did you know that Joe Medwick was pulled out of the Game 7 of the 1934 World Series by Commissioner Landis? Detroit Tigers fans started pelting Medwick with garbage after he slid hard into third base on a triple. Landis also ordered Tigers third baseman Marv Owen, into whom Medwick had slid, benched. Medwick remains the only known player to be "thrown-out" of a game for his own "personal safety." When asked about the incident by reporters after the game Medwick said, "Well, I knew why they threw that garbage at me. What I don't understand is why they brought it to the park in the first place." Listen to Joe Medwick discuss that moment in the following radio interview:

Did you know that when Joe Medwick finished the 1936 season with 64 doubles, he set a new National League record for doubles in season?

Joe Medwick, a year later, went 4-for-5 in the 1937 All-Star Game, the first All-Star with four hits in a Midsummer Classic. The record has since been tied, twice, by Ted Williams (1946 All-Star Game) and Carl Yastrzemski (1970 All-Star Game).

Muscles, the "Gashouse Gang" left fielder, was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame by the Baseball Writers Association of America in 1968, receiving 84.81% of the votes (on his tenth ballot). The ten-time All-Star finished with a lifetime .324 batting average (Top 40), won the National League Triple Crown and a Most Valuable Player Award in 1937, and is still, through today, the last National League player to win a Triple Crown.
