"The best defensive catcher I ever pitched to was Johnny Edwards. Johnny had a good memory and the ability to change the game plan based on how his pitcher was throwing on a given day. I'll never forget what he told me one night in San Diego. It was the third inning and I was struggling. I still hadn't given up much, maybe a run, but I was in trouble the first two innings and it seemed like I was shaking off the fastball about half the time. When I got to the bench, Johnny came over and sat next to me. He asked me why I wasn't throwing more fastballs. I told him that it was because I didn't feel like I had a very good baseball. 'Bullshit!' he said. 'How many fastballs have they hit hard so far?' I thought about it for a moment and said, 'None.' 'Well,' he said, 'you may not feel like you're throwing it well, but it looks pretty good from my angle.' I started throwing more fastballs after that and breezed through the rest of the game." - Larry Dierker in My Team: Choosing My Dream Team from My Forty Years in Baseball (Simon & Schuster Publishers, 06/12/2007, Page 28)
