Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"Eddie Collins: #2 Greatest Second Baseman: Collins was small, strong, quick, agile, extremely competitive, and extremely smart. He was a nervous, edgy man, like Johnny Evers, couldn't sit still. On the baseball field, he was aggressive to the point of being arrogant. Off the field, he was modest to the point of being shy. Collins is described in various sources as the best bunter in the history of baseball, the best hit-and-run man in the history of baseball, the best defensive second baseman in the history of baseball, the best sign-stealer who ever lived, and greatest World Series star who ever lived. Kid Gleason, who managed Collins on the White Sox, said that Collins was greatest team player who ever lived. Connie Mack said that Collins was the greatest team player who ever lived. Billy Evans, who was an umpire for many years while Collins was on the field, later a General Manager, said Collins was the quickest thinker that he ever saw." - James, Bill. Baseball Historian. In 1883, Francis Richter founded The Sporting Life, a weekly magazine devoted to coverage of all sports, with an emphasis on baseball. In 1887, Richter, and other baseball journalists, formed the Base Ball Reporters Association of America, also referred to as the National Base Ball Reporters' Association. And in 1914, Richter wrote the History and Records of Baseball: the American Nation's Chief Sport (Philadelphia: Sporting Life Publishing Co., 1914). In that historic book, Richter selected the greatest players in each position in each decade:

Did you know that Eddie Collins was the first American League (AL) player to steal 80-or-more bases in a single season? His record setting eighty-one steals in 1910, broke the previous record for swipes in a season (AL) held by Ty Cobb, who had seventy-six steals in 1909. Both marks have since been broken in the junior circuit by: Ty Cobb (83 SB in 1911), Clyde Milan (88 SB in 1912), Ty Cobb (96 SB in 1915), Rickey Henderson (100 SB in 1980), and Rickey Henderson (130 SB in 1982). Join Baseball Almanac as we take a look at some additional numbers of interest for Cocky Collins:

3 - Eddie Collins hit a career high .365 in 1911, hit over .340 in ten different (full) seasons, but never once won a batting title! He did, however, have the second best league batting average three different times!

4 - Eddie Collins played Major League Baseball in four different decades, 1906-1909, 1910-1919, 1920-1929, and 1930, the seventh player in baseball history, following Dan Brouthers, Kid Gleason, Deacon McGuire, Jack O'Connor, Jim O'Rourke and Jack Ryan. [Tenure and Age Records]

24 - Eddie Collins was ranked twenty-fourth by The Sporting News when they released their list of the 100 Greatest Baseball Players in the history of baseball.

3,314 - Eddie Collins finished his Hall of Fame career with 3,314 hits, the fourth most in baseball history at the time of his retirement (behind Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker and Honus Wagner), the sixth player to enter the 3,000 Hits Club.

On June 14, 1912, Clyde Milan became the first American League (AL) player to steal five bases in a game, a record that stood for only a few months. On September 11, 1912, Eddie Collins became the first AL player to steal six bases in a game, then less than two weeks later (on September 22, 1912), Cocky stole six bases in a game a second time! Through today, no other player in Major League Baseball history has stolen six bases in a game more than once! [Stolen Base Records / Every Player With 5-or-more Steals in a Game]
