This was the fortieth anniversary of the All-Star Game and Major League Baseball invited all the living players from the 1933 Midsummer Classic (twenty attended).

Did you know that during the second inning, Billy Williams hit a hard liner back to the pitcher (Catfish Hunter) and fractured the ace's right thumb?

Bill Singer was accused throwing spitballs and he denied it. His catcher, Carlton Fisk, described the passed ball he was charged with by saying, "He (Bill Singer) really loaded one and the ball went all the way back to the screen. (Pete) Rose looked at me and I said to him, 'He surprised me more than he did you.'"
