Thurman Munson bought four planes during his lifetime culminating on November 17, 1978 with the purchase of a blue and white, seven-seat, twin-engine, Cessna Citation 501, that he marked with his Yankee number, "N15NY". Munson was certified to fly the Citation on July 17, 1979, only 11 days after it had been delivered (July 6, 1979). On August 2, 1979, at 4:02 p.m., the Citation struck the ground about 1,000 feet short of runway 1-9 in a field dotted with small trees at the Akron-Canton Airport.
