Garry Maddox: The Secretary of Defense

Garry Maddox | The Secretary of Defense | 2006 Fleer | Baseball Almanac Collection

The eight consecutive Gold Glove Awards in the Outfield (1975 through 1982) easily illustrate just how great The Secretary of Defense was, but here are some other noteworthy opinions:

In The New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract (Page 760), historian Bill James said, "I've seen Garry Maddox do it all. In my estimation, he's the best defensive centerfield ever to play the game."

In Sports Illustrated (July 3, 1978), sportswriter Larry Keith said, "In an era when players who bat .260 and can catch a lazy fly ball act as if they are all-world, it is, to say the least, rare to find an athlete with a career .296 batting average and three Gold Gloves who is humble, kind, unfailingly courteous, God-fearing and a lot of other good things. Philadelphia's Garry Maddox, who after six major league seasons has ever so quietly became the best centerfield in baseball, is just such a man. The trouble is that hardly anyone known it, because Maddox labors in the shadows of more famous Phillies -- Greg Luzinski, Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton, to name several -- and never says a word about this misfortune." Additional quotes in that same SI:

Tim McCarver said of Maddox, "Garry is a beautiful person and also the best centerfield I've ever seen. If I didn't believe that, I'd hedge. Remember, I played with Curt Flood, too. He was best at going back to the wall, but overall Garry is better."

Richie Hebner said of Maddox, "Not only do I think Garry's the best, but I've also had umpires tell me that he is, right in the middle of games."

Jim Kaat [who knew defense, winning sixteen Gold Gloves as a pitcher] said of Maddox, "Only Paul Blair comes close to Garry."

In Few and Chosen Phillies: Defining Phillies Greatness Across the Eras, Gary Matthews said, "I also was in the room a few years later, in 1975, when they told Maddox he was being traded to the Phillies for Willie Montanez. The word around the team was that Maddox was being traded because he wasn't very good defensively. What a joke! Maddox went to Philadelphia and won eight consecutive Gold Gloves from 1975 to 1982, as many as Barry Bonds, Paul Blair, and Dwight Evans and more than Curt Flood, Kirby Puckett and Bobby Bonds... Despite that, in my mind Maddox doesn't get enough credit for saving runs. When you talk about defense, one of the first players you think of is Ozzie Smith. He made the Hall of Fame for his defense. But Garry Maddox was every bit as good defensively as his position as Ozzie was at his."

Phillies Centennial Team

Phillies Centennial Team Plaque | Philadelphia Phillies | Citizens Bank Ballpark

The Philadelphia Baseball Wall of Fame is a collection of plaques, mounted on a brick wall in the Ashburn Alley section of Citizens Bank Park. From 1978 to 2003, the Phillies inducted one figure from their franchise history and one notable person from the Philadelphia Athletics (A's) organization each year, with the exception of 1983, when the Phillies inducted their Centennial Team. Their Centennial Team commemorates the best players of the first 100 years in franchise history and Mcgraw made the team which includes: Richie Ashburn (OF), Bob Boone (C), Larry Bowa (SS), Steve Carlton (LHP), Del Ennis (OF), Dallas Green (MGR), Jim Konstanty (RHP), Garry Maddox (OF), Tug McGraw (LHP), Robin Roberts (RHP), Pete Rose (1B), Mike Schmidt (3B) and Manny Trillo (2B).
